Abbie Dann brings over 30 years of practical international experience as a senior Canadian diplomat, trade commissioner and communications specialist to her work on the CESO Board of Directors.
During her time as trade commissioner, Ms. Dann represented Canada in Brazil, in the Netherlands, in India where she opened the Canadian Government Trade Office in Bombay/ Mumbai, and in New York where she worked promoting almost every economic and investment sector of importance to Canada. She served as our Ambassador to Ukraine and as Consul General to Brazil. Ms. Dann’s strategic and hands on business background equips her to make a pragmatic contribution to CESO’s development programs, both internationally and in Canada.
At Foreign Affairs headquarters in Ottawa, Ms. Dann worked extensively as an international communications specialist – as Ministerial and Departmental Spokesperson to both the Ministers of International Trade and Minister of External Affairs/Foreign Affairs. She pioneered internet programming to the Department as Director of European Communications & Connectivity. She was also Director of the Department’s Foreign Policy Communications Division and Director of Communications/Media for the 2001 Summit of the Americas process.
After leaving government in 2013, Ms. Dann served as a Member and Vice-President on the Boards of several non-profits organizations, including Canadian International Council (CIC) – National Capital Branch and Retired Heads of Mission Association (RHOMA). She also teaches bilingual courses on International Networking and Intercultural Relations and Protocol at the Canadian Foreign Service Institute (CFSI). She recently returned from a 2-month mission as an LTO – Longer Term Observer for the NGO CANADEM, as part of their 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election mission.
Ms. Dann has a B.A. (McGill), M.A. (Carleton) and was a Harvard International Fellow – 1991-1992. She has considerable experience as an analyst and writer, and enjoys original source research.
