Insurance

Effective September 2006, CESO-paid health insurance coverage for Volunteer Advisers on assignments is provided by American International Group (American Home).

  • Coverage includes volunteers and their spouses up to and including age 79
  • $250,000 maximum benefit of health care cost for lifetime
  • Maximum duration of one trip of 60 days (with the ability to purchase extended coverage on an individual basis if and when warranted) [See EXTRA MEDICAL COVERAGE below]
  • Coverage is extended for up to three days after assignment
  • There is a three-month pre-existing condition limitation

VAs aged 80 and over

Unfortunately, insurance providers will no longer insure VAs aged 80 and over.

Here is an outline of our additional coverage on international assignments:

  1. ACCIDENT, DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT (AD&D) - Emergency Evacuation

$50,000 with a $10,000 deductible
Maximum duration of one trip of 60 days (with the ability to purchase extended coverage on an individual basis if and when warranted). [See EXTRA MEDICAL COVERAGE below] Coverage is extended for up to 21 days after the assignment in the case of an emergency evacuation.

  1. LIFE INSURANCE

American Home pays $75,000 for Volunteer/$50,000 for spouse.

  1. AD&D ACCIDENT FACTOR COVERAGE

CESO pays separate premiums for AD&D accident factor coverage according to percentage of country risk chart sent to CESO on a regular basis.

  1. SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE

CESO pays separate premiums for volunteers who are still working and would like to be covered for short-term disability.

  1. EXTRA MEDICAL COVERAGE OFFERED THROUGH NAVIGANT

CESO-paid medical health coverage ends three days after the completion of the assignment. At present, volunteers, if extending their trip for personal reasons, can purchase coverage through Navigant, our in-house travel agency. This coverage is through RBC Insurance. They provide a questionnaire and the rates are as follows (example based on ages 65 to 69):

  • If all the responses to the questionnaire are NO (meaning that they are in good health and do not smoke), the rate for one month is $275.00
  • If one of the responses to the questionnaire is YES (meaning that there is a pre-existing health problem or they smoke), the rate for one month is $536.00

The volunteers also have the option of purchasing insurance only for the number of days they will remain abroad after the assignment.

If you have any questions about insurance, please e-mail Violeta Gomez, Office Administrator.
