Is CESO for YOU?

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for CESO. This questionnaire will help you decide if you and CESO are likely to be right for each other.

NB: Please note that as part of the recruitment process, CESO will be asking potential candidates if they have ever been convicted of a criminal offence, for which they have not received a pardon. Potential candidates will be asked to submit references and they, too, will be asked about the candidate's history.

1.  Are you legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e. a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant)?

NO - Unfortunately, you are not currently eligible to join CESO's Roster of Volunteers. If your status changes and you are still interested in joining CESO as a Volunteer Adviser, please consider visiting our Web site again. Thank you.

YES - All CESO VAs must be eligible to work in Canada. You meet this important requirement; therefore, please proceed to Question 2.

2. Do you have at least 10 years’ experience in your area of expertise?

NO - You do not have at least 10 years’ experience in your area of expertise.

Unfortunately, this means we cannot consider you for our Roster of Volunteers.  CESO's mandate is to provide our clients with highly skilled expert advisers; therefore, our VAs must have at least 10 years' experience in any given area of expertise.  Please feel free to apply once you meet this requirement.

YES - This is a vital requirement, since CESO's mandate is to provide our clients with highly skilled expert advisers. Please go on to Question 3.

3. Have you worked (consulting and volunteer work included) in your area of expertise within the last 5 years?

NO - This means that you are unlikely to be accepted on CESO's Roster of Volunteers. Our VAs need to be experts and to have current expertise. However, there may be exceptions in areas of particular need, such as the following:

  • Agri-business/Agriculture (especially crop management and livestock)
  • Business plan writing
  • Food and beverage services/Accommodation service industries
  • Food processing industries
  • Governance
  • Handicrafts
  • Human Resources management
  • Tourism and eco-tourism

YES - Recent experience is very important to the success of a CESO assignment. Therefore, volunteers who have current skills are more likely to be considered for assignments.

4. Do you have work experience, in your area of expertise, in Canada or another Western country?

NO - With some exceptions, you are unlikely to be considered for our Roster of Volunteers. Our client-partners require volunteers with Canadian or Western experience, so these volunteers are the ones who are most often selected for assignments. However, if your current experience falls within one of the following high-demand categories, you may still be accepted onto CESO's Roster of Volunteers.

  • Agri-business/Agriculture (especially crop management and livestock)
  • Business plan writing
  • Food and beverage services/Accommodation service industries
  • Food processing industries
  • Governance
  • Handicrafts
  • Human Resources management
  • Tourism and eco-tourism

YES - This means you are more likely to be accepted onto CESO's Roster of Volunteers. Our client-partners value Western experience, which means these VAs are in demand.

5. Would you be able to leave home and go on assignment for 2 days - 2 months at a time?

NO - Individuals who have flexible schedules are best suited to volunteering for CESO. Overseas assignment typically last two to eight weeks, but on occasion can last as long as three months. Aboriginal assignments are usually shorter, lasting from 2 days to 2 weeks at a time, but volunteers tend to return to the same client for follow-up work which may take place over a year or so.

6. Are you experienced in writing reports, or willing to learn?

NO - Report writing is an integral part of each assignment. Our clients and funders require written reports at the completion of all assignments. Our VAs therefore need to submit reports and we are more than happy to provide help wherever needed. Unfortunately, VAs who do not submit reports may not be offered any further assignments.

7. Are you age 75 or older?

NO - Our insurance provider has given us an age limit for coverage. Since you are not age 75 or older, please continue.

YES - Since our insurance provider limits coverage based on age, this means we cannot consider you for our Roster of Volunteers.
