Volunteering

Volunteers work in partnership with our clients building capacity in Canada and overseas. CESO offers exciting volunteer opportunities to share professional skills and experience, gain cross-cultural insights and understanding, and create lasting connections around the globe.
What is a Volunteer Adviser (VA)?
CESO VAs are altruistic women and men with a high-level of up-to-date, business, technical and/or professional expertise. VAs come from a variety of occupations and technical backgrounds and use their skills working alongside our clients within Africa, Asia, the Americas, Eastern Europe and Aboriginal communities across Canada. VAs serve in various roles such as workshop facilitators, advisers, trainers and mentors to help clients achieve their goals. Flexibility, professionalism, ethical conduct, cross-cultural adaptability, and willingness to transfer skills are qualities that make our VAs special people.
The Assignment Experience
Our clients in rural and urban areas request the services of our volunteers to assist them in reaching their goals and objectives. The nature and number of the requests that we receive varies throughout the year and across our programs.
When a request is received, our role is to identify the Volunteer Adviser(s) on our roster whose skills and experience will best meet the needs of our clients. Volunteers who have been identified for a potential assignment are contacted to determine their availability and to confirm if the assignment is a good match. Additionally, volunteers can access listed opportunities and self-identify their suitability for assignments. Ultimately, CESO’s clients have the final decision on approving the Volunteer Adviser they will be working with.
Assignments require a considerable time commitment, ranging from a few days to several weeks, and the VA must have the flexibility to fit our clients’ schedules. Volunteers prepare for their assignment by contacting the client and gathering the necessary information to prepare.
Volunteer Advisers and clients work in partnership to create positive change and achieve sustainable results in areas of economic development and governance.
