The Development Wheel – An Introduction to Community Economic Development
This four-day workshop focuses on the basics of community economic development (CED) and a detailed scenario in which to apply its principles to operational planning for First Nations.
Data and instructions are provided for a simulation exercise in which readers define and integrate steps in organizational development, venture development, strategic networking, and community participation.
Checklists permit a simple, but systematic assessment and comparison of stakeholder needs, organizational performance, and the development proposals of outside consultants. A scan of funding sources can be included. This process can serve any Community or organization that needs to determine where it stands in the CED process.

ADD 1:1 Adviser Option: Economic Plan Development
Once a Community has begun the CED Visioning process with the Development Wheel workshop a CESO VA can work with the community on developing/refining an Economic Development Plan. This will include a draft Economic Development Plan.

Workshop: Venture Development Basics
This five-day workshop explains how small communities can foster successful businesses.
Topics include procedures for identifying, screening, selecting, planning, and implementing business opportunities that are sound from the perspective of both the entrepreneur and the community.
A shortlist of possible Ventures will be developed and evaluated for feasibility based on the criteria set by participants in the Venture Development Workshop.

Once a Community has identified 1-2 top options for new Ventures CESO can provide a VA with experience in the sector to assist with the development of a Feasibility Plan to take to Chief and Council and for presentation to funders for Business Planning funds (i.e. INAC- CEDP, FNIF, ABC etc)

Workshop: Development Corporation Basics
To revitalize depressed communities, local people must build the capacity to organize and manage economic development in their own interests. To focus and manage such a strategy there must be some kind of organization.
The Community-based Aboriginal Development Corporation is a particularly flexible and powerful organizational structure to employ in this purpose. What issues and decisions require attention when establishing a development corporation?
This workshop introduces the key issues related to mandate, roles, and functions, and outlines steps to address them. Profit, reinvestment, staffing, and other crucial policy decisions are addressed and illustrated. Useful for both First Nations and other groups.

CESO VAs with Senior Business Management/Corporate Board Management can be matched with Development Corporations to advise on structure, business operations/acquisitions, investments, joint ventures, Director/Trustee training and other related requests.

Workshop: Aboriginal Joint Ventures and 1:1 Adviser on selected negotiations
Often applied very loosely to any sort of inter-business collaboration, the joint venture is in fact a very powerful tool for the empowerment of small communities. A well-designed and -implemented joint venture can boost the investment activity of a community-based development corporation, reduce its risks, and increase its capacity to deliver profits, management influence, jobs, training, and business opportunities to local people.
This workshop lays out the state of the art related to analyzing, negotiating, and structuring joint ventures that work for communities. It includes case studies and checklists and sample agreements to help negotiating teams keep out of trouble and on track. A must for any First Nation organization or company thinking about joint ventures as a possible strategy.

Workshop: Human Resource Planning
Critical to any plan for community renewal must be a strategy to ready the skills, attitudes, and self-concept of local people.
'Ready, Willing, & Able' outlines the elements of human resource assessment, planning, and evaluation, and explains how to integrate these processes with the community's vision of the future it desires for itself.
Easy to use, and featuring many explanatory illustrations and diagrams, it will help community leaders, planners, and economic and social development staff keep human resource development in the forefront of the agenda of local revitalization.

ADD 1:1 Adviser Option: HR Policy Review and Recommendations
Many First Nations are interested in a review of their HR Policies. CESO VAs with Senior HR Experience are available to work with staff on this review of HR Policies, salary grids etc. and can support the development and implementation of training/communication of new policies and procedures to staff.
