Aboriginal Women for Tomorrow (AWFT)

This workshop series is aimed at strengthening today’s Aboriginal Women to increase participation in non-traditional roles of business, governance and leadership.

The workshops part of the AWFT program are:

  • Building Personal and Job Search Skills
    • This workshop will help you discover your personal skills and interests and show you how this knowledge can be used to build self-confidence as well as how it can be applied to finding employment or starting a business.
    • We will help you determine your saleable skills and show you how to do a successful job search.
    • We will take you through the steps necessary to landing a job, including résumé writing, cover letter writing and job interviews.
  • Communication Skills
    • You will be provided with tools such as checklists and sample letter formats. Role playing will be used in the workshop to develop communication skills. Participants are asked to make short presentations to the group. If equipment is available, the presentations will be videotaped for discussion and improvement purposes. Presentation topics include:
      • How to communicate effectively
      • Public Speaking
      • Written Communications
  • How To Start Your Own business
    • This workshop will show you the critical steps to starting your own business. You will learn how a business plan will help you focus on planning and managing your business and how it can help you to obtain financing and maintain financial control. The workshops include:
      • Introduction to entrepreneurship
      • Exploring business opportunities
      • Finding sources of help
      • Writing a business plan
      • Getting your business started
      • How to effectively run a business
      • Importance of having a mentor
  • Community and Organization Governance
    • This workshop focuses on the functional and legal responsibilities of a board member or council member. You will learn how to avoid conflicts of interest as a board member and why this is important. The relationships between boards, councils, committees and staff will be discussed.
  • Financial Management
    • This workshop will improve your understanding of personal finances, business financial reports and band finances. You will learn how to budget your own personal finances and balance income and expenses, using a sample budget. The session on business finance will introduce you to accounting principles, audits and financial reports. The session on band finances will help you to understand the sources of band revenue and how it is allocated, spent and accounted.
  • Health & Wellness
    • Our ancestors were guided by a strong value system. In the Aboriginal worldview, the purpose for human beings is wellness, peace and happiness. We move toward that purpose by seeking balance and harmony in life and the fulfillment of personal potential. In this workshop we will explore and share some ideas for a healthy work/life balance from the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life. This includes; healthy eating, some new ways to learn and see the world, spending time with family and friends and following our own spiritual beliefs. We will also look at ways of creating and sustaining positive change in all aspects of life.

Aboriginal Financial Management: The Road To Success

This 2 workshop seminar series, developed by CESO Aboriginal Services and funded by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), is offered free of charge to Aboriginal peoples across Canada. The standard application fee of $150 applies.

Workshop 1: Understanding Basic Bookkeeping

Understanding Basic Bookkeeping (UBB) is an introduction to the basics of double entry bookkeeping, making journal entries, and some understanding of income statements and balance sheets. The course is helpful to anyone new to accounting or with a need to understand bookkeeping as part of their job responsibilities.

Workshop 2: Aboriginal Financial Management

Aboriginal Financial Management (AFM) builds on the basics and concentrates to a greater degree on balance sheets, income statements, budgeting, variance reporting and managing the financial aspects of a business. It is intended for those persons who have attended the UBB or have an understanding of accounting, and will be of interest to individuals from the band office, entrepreneurs, and community organizers.


National Métis Development Fund

  • The CESO Métis Development Fund, supported by the Royal Bank Foundation and the Government of Alberta, has helped CESO provide services for Métis peoples, who account for 30% of the Aboriginal population. 
  • Since 1999 the Fund has allowed CESO to complete more than 40 Métis projects in the areas of governance, organizational development, strategic planning, forestry planning, fundraising and business development.
