Indian Residential School (IRS) Program Information Session Overview
The Information Sessions on Financial Management for Indian Residential School Survivors present the following topics:
Banking today can seem complicated to many people. Information about the value of using banks and the many services that they offer will be provided. Presenters will explain common banking terms and fees, also the advantages and disadvantages of different types of plans.
Aboriginal people today have more personal financing options and tools than ever before. Information will be provided to help the survivors set their financial goals, build their own budget, operate within the budget, and manage their finances and credit.
Information will be provided to help explain the role of financial advisers and the services they provide. The advantages and disadvantages of different options such as GICs, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc. will also be discussed. In addition, presenters will address taxation issues and RRSP’s as they affect Aboriginal people and communities.
- Business Entrepreneurship
The settlement money provides the survivors with the opportunity to start the business they have always dreamed about. Information on developing a business plan, setting goals, and identifying their market will be provided. Furthermore, tips on maintaining healthy management practices will also be shared.
Unfortunately frauds and scams are part of life and con artists have already set their sights on residential school settlement recipients. Information will be provided that will help the survivors and their family members identify frauds and scams. Presenters will also share tips on what to do if approached.
Many recipients of the residential school settlements are finding this an opportune time to prepare or update their wills. Information will be provided on the importance of having a will, on the types of wills available, and also how to effectively deal with your estate.
