This is your CESO registration kit. It contains a registration form, special instructions for filling out the form, and guidelines for creating a resume. Further details can be obtained from CESOs Operations Centre at 700 Bay Street, Suite 700, Box 328, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1Z6, Tel.: (4l6) 96l-2376 or 1-800-268-9052 outside Toronto, Fax: (416) 961-1096, E-Mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:volunteers.toronto@ceso-saco.com?subject=Web%20Volunteer%20Submission" volunteers.toronto@ceso-saco.com or else contact one of our regional offices listed below. The following are special instructions for filling in the attached Volunteer Adviser Registration Form. We ask you to read the form carefully and complete all sections. If you do not complete the form in full, it will be returned to you, thus delaying processing of your application. CESO will not accept photocopies of the form. If you require more working copies, please let us know. If you have any questions about the form, please contact the Roster Department at the above address and phone number or one of the CESO regional offices. We would be pleased to help. CESO has about 3,000 registered Volunteer Advisers. While CESO cannot guarantee an assignment for you, a well presented registration form and a detailed resum or CV greatly increase your chances of being selected by a CESO client. If you wish to provide a more detailed, typed resume or CV, it may be included with your application. Please note that the resum may not be substituted for the employment history requested on the registration form. If you are bilingual and also wish to be considered for assignments in French-speaking countries, you must complete a Registration Form in French as well (available upon request). You need to include a French resume or CV also. You must be able to perform an assignment and write reports in French. We strive to maintain up-to-date and accurate information on all Volunteer Advisers. While we contact Volunteer Advisers on a regular basis to update their personal and work-related information, we encourage you to keep us informed of such changes as they occur. TIPS TO ASSIST YOU IN COMPLETING THE VOLUNTEER ADVISER REGISTRATION FORM Applicants & spouses/partners surname / first name / middle name Enter your name and that of your spouse or partner as they appear on your passports. This is important for travel and insurance purposes. Preferred name Keep in mind that should your name appear in print, (in CESOs newsletter for example), it is your preferred name that will be used (e.g. Bill rather than William). Photo For identification purposes, please include one (only one please) recent passport photo and indicate the date that the photo was taken. (See Instructions on last page of CESO Volunteer Adviser Registration Form.) Alternate contact If we have an assignment for you to consider or other reasons to contact you, we are asking you to provide the name of someone who will know where you can be contacted should you not be available at your residence or business. Emergency phone number If you are away on a CESO assignment, we need to know who we can contact in case of an emergency. Do not list your spouse or partner if he/she may be accompanying you on an assignment. Languages Be sure to list only those languages in which you feel confident to conduct business. Summary of experience This should be a brief summary of your experience that can be viewed at a glance. In other words, describe your career history as if you had to promote your skills and work experience and expertise to a client, using only the space provided and no more. Employment History Be as clear and concise as you can be so that we have the best overall picture of your expertise. Please indicate clearly your experience with small and medium sized business or self-employment. We need to know this because many of our clients are small businesses. When selecting key words to describe your skills, use single words or simple words or simple phrases which will enhance or describe those skills. Two sample employment histories are included as a separate attachment for you to use as a guide. You are asked to provide business references which will be contacted following an interview. Resume If you do not have a recent resume, or wish to revise an existing one, we have included guidelines below for you to follow, as well as a sample resume. You must include a resume or curriculum vitae as it will support and augment the information you provide on the registration form. The CESO client will primarily use this document to base a decision about you should you be considered for an assignment. Please have your resume typed, preferably in Microsoft Word. N.B. If you use a company/organization acronym, please indicate the full name. RESUM GUIDELINES This Resum or curriculum vitae is used primarily to promote your skills and expertise to a client. A CESO clients decision to accept you will be based on its contents. The following guidelines and attached example are designed to assist you in writing an effective Resum. Other Resum forms are acceptable but, in our experience, the following format has been most successful. PRIVATEFull Name:First Name, Middle Name and Family Name Address:Area Code & Phone Number: Area Code & Fax Number: E-mail Address: Summary of Experience:Describe yourself briefly so the reader can have an idea of your experience. CODE OF CONDUCT The CESO|SACO mission and values are reflected in the daily conduct of all those representing CESO|SACO in any capacity. We treat clients with the same dignity, respect and professionalism with which we expect to be treated. We treat each other within CESO|SACO in the same manner. We uphold the mandate and interests of CESO|SACO at all times. We behave respectfully, which includes being sensitive to cultural and religious differences, differences in values, life experience and in personality. We reflect in our behaviour and communications with clients and with each other the spirit of human rights legislation in Canada. We avoid all expressions of racism and sexism and any other forms of discriminatory behaviour as cited in the statute (Canadian Human Rights Act, Chapter H6, January 1989). We are responsible, objective and reliable, ensuring relevancy and effectiveness in all dealings, whether internal or external. STATEMENT OF GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR CESO|SACO VOLUNTEERS Preamble The mission of CESO|SACO is to build capacity in governance and economic development through the transfer of knowledge and skills by Volunteer Advisers. The priority of CESO|SACO is to meet identified needs of clients. It is the participation of CESO|SACO volunteers, by providing advisory services in a professional and cost-effective manner to our clients, which is the essential element in accomplishing our mission. While not the purpose for which CESO|SACO was established, concomitant benefits obtained from the fulfillment of its mission and its focus on that priority are (a) the discovery of potential economic linkages between CESO|SACOs clients and other Canadian enterprises and (b) the means to provide energetic and socially-motivated Canadians with continuing opportunities to feel useful and satisfy their aspirations as: - Volunteer Advisors in the field, - support to staff in offices, - members of the parent and subsidiary Boards, - members of regional committees and CESO|SACO Clubs. Guiding Principles CESO|SACO volunteers are individuals who reach out beyond the confines of paid employment and normal responsibilities to contribute time and service to those with social and economic needs. They, therefore, believe their activity is beneficial to others as well as satisfying to themselves. Volunteers perform tasks with direction from and, on behalf of CESO|SACO, without compensation or the expectation of compensation beyond reimbursement for approved out-of-pocket expenses. Volunteers have no economic or other beneficial interest in the services they perform. Like the paid staff of CESO|SACO, volunteers understand the importance of commitment, adhering to normal work standards and behaviour, and strive for the highest level of quality service. Integral to this commitment is a respect for all people which will not be compromised by gender, racial, social or religious bias. The success of Volunteer Advisers is based on their willingness to share knowledge by working alongside clients and designated counterparts, as partners dedicated to a common goal. Volunteers understand that their time and expertise are deployed within a framework of policies, procedures and targets established and/or approved by the CESO|SACO Board of Directors. Upon enrolment as a Volunteer Adviser or as a volunteer working in any CESO|SACO office, volunteers agree to abide by these principles and to cooperate with staff members in furthering the aims of CESO|SACO.
